Anbumani Ramadoss is a doctor-turned politician from the state of Tamil Nadu. He is a Member of Parliament from Dharmapuri Constituency. He is a member of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) political party. The 48-year-old politician was also the Minister of Health and Family Welfare during the UPA-1 regime from 2004-2009. He is the only Member of Parliament belonging to PMK. Born in 1968 in Puducherry, Ramadoss went to medical school to become a doctor. He attended Montfort Boys Higher Secondary School in Yercaud. He then did his higher secondary from St. Ann's Higher Secondary School, Tindivanam.
He then pursued MBBS from Madras Medical College. After successfully completing his graduation he practiced medicine for a year and a half at a small village near Tindivanam. Later in 2003, went to the London School of Economics to pursue a course on macroeconomics. The political outfit Pattali Makkal Katchi was founded by his father Dr. S Ramadoss in 1989. He kickstarted his political career by joining his father's party. He was made it's Youth Wing President.
Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss got his break in 2004 when he won a seat in Rajya Sabha and remained until the completion of tenure in 2010. In 2004, when he took over the ministry of health and family welfare, he was the youngest minister in the cabinet. He was the minister who initiated and started 108 ambulance services. To eradicate diseases and improve the quality of medical treatment he constituted various institutions, viz. National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Department of Health Research, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, etc.
